I have always been interested in telling stories. When I was around six years old, I wrote on the edges of wallpaper that my dad, a painter and decorator, used. As a young man, I continued to write many of my stories, but life always got in the way. I started many manuscripts but failed to complete them.
Six years ago, while living on a small holding in South Africa, our home was invaded by gunmen. My wife and I had promised ourselves never to be tied up like a lot of our neighbours who were either shot dead or tied up, robbed at gunpoint.
My Story cont...
This was a life-changing moment for all of us. I was shot three times and survived, my wife faced down the gunmen after I threw a shard of glass and ran for my gun.
After getting out of hospital, my wife encouraged me to complete one of my books that was by then, 8 years in the making, gathering dust. I completed this book in just over a week whilst my wife started the editing process. I was accepted by two publishers within a month, not realising that my journey and learning curve were just starting. This book is now called THE DEADLY DENIAL.
I never plan a story. I write, and the story just flows. I’m always looking forward to finding out what is going to happen in my own story! I never get writer’s block either. I start the process, usually where I left off, and the story flows onto the pages. It is like the characters are living the story and directing the process through my typing. When I get my characters in tight situations, I say to my wife, ‘I’m wondering how my leading protagonist is going to survive this time?’ I therefore do not think that I could teach my method of writing as there is no process to my stories taking life. I do, however, have lessons burned in my mind from the writing process and business models used, which I will share on blogs for aspiring writers.
One of my major strengths is that I can write 3,000 to 5,000 words a day. Most authors write far less. I get absorbed in the stories and the characters, and my wife would sometimes have to remind me that the characters are not actually real but I’m not entirely sure I agree with her! This always brings a laughter in our house, and I would love to think that the characters come to life for my readers, as they do for me.
My business, work and life experiences assist me greatly with my stories and characters, both good and not so good.
I joined the Derbyshire Constabulary at the age of sixteen as a cadet. Then the Royal Military Police serving in Germany and Northern Ireland, the latter as an investigator with the Special Investigation Branch. This was during the major troubles in the early 1970s. In the ensuing three and a half years, I investigated many murders and attempted murders against the security forces and serious crimes committed by the soldiers.
I immigrated to Australia in 1974 and was initially a private detective working for a small agency, mainly investigating cases of insurance fraud and infidelity. This was before starting my business career, which took me to corporate America with multi-billion-dollar companies. I worked closely with the two biggest direct sales icons globally, followed by millions of distributors.
I have been published by two major publishers; however, with the changes in the publishing world, I now prefer to publish my own books, and marketing is a family affair!
I have lived on five continents, visited nearly every country in the world and currently reside in Oxford, United Kingdom, with my wife and two children. I have four grown-up children in Australia and five grandchildren.
